Tom leads the day to day operations for CFI and has led development of commercial
software for more than twenty years. He has developed applications ranging from electronics factory
automation software to advanced genomic data processing systems. Tom oversees the development of CFI’s
GET-Evidence system in collaboration with Harvard PGP. Today, this open system processes, integrates and
interprets data from hundreds of whole genomes and other sources.
Dr. Joe Thakuria, MD, MMSc - Director of Clinical Genomics
Joe oversees all clinical consulting from CFI and
its stable of clinical consultants. He is a clinical geneticist, serving as instructor and attending physician in
Clinical and Biochemical Genetics at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also the Medical Director for
the Personal Genome Project and one of eight faculty members in the Harvard Catalyst Translational Genetics
and Bioinformatics Program. Dr. Thakuria is one of the busiest clinical geneticists actively treating patients
with the diagnostic and software tools available today. He founded CFI to create the tools necessary for
application of genomic data for clinical diagnosis and medical discovery.
Ward Vandewege, MSc - Director of Technology
Ward leads development and operations of
CFI’s clinical-grade cloud platform. He has been in charge of systems
architecture and mission-critical operations in both Europe and the US. He has
also been a senior systems administrator for the Free Software Foundation.
Dr. Alexander (Sasha) Wait Zaranek, PhD - Scientific Director
Sasha guides the feature set, architecture and vision for CFI’s products.
He is Director of Informatics at the
Personal Genome Project. Sasha’s research focus is the development of
clinical-quality applications for processing massive data sets spanning
millions of individual humans across collaborating organizations, eventually
encompassing exabytes of data.
Zen Chu, MBA - Chairman of the Board of Directors
Accelerated Medical Ventures
Zen works as a cofounder, adviser and investor in early stage medical device, consumer healthcare, and connected health
ventures. Prior to AMV, he served as the founding Director of Business Development for the Wyss Institute at Harvard
Medical School and their internal Accelerator Venture Fund. Zen co-founded 3DM Biomaterials along with a world-renowned
group of MIT scientists, serving as the CEO of the venture-backed regenerative medicine and drug-delivery company for
five years leading to successful clinical studies and an acquisition in 2008. In Silicon Valley, Zen created and
directed Hewlett Packard's HPGarage new technology ventures program. He has also served as an advisor on healthcare
innovation to Brigham & Women's Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences & Technology
(HST). Zen earned a BS in Biomedical/Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University and a Masters of Business
Administration from Yale University.
